Does AI Recommend Your Products — or Your Competitors?

A buyer asks what to choose. Your model may be missing, described as a different variant or linked to the wrong item. AI shopping visibility should show which of these happened, not just count your brand name. Start with the actual answer and the requirements behind the recommendation.

See My AI Pilot PlanUse your existing product pages. No promise of ranking, recommendation or sales.

Why is AI recommending a competitor instead of your product?

Capture the question, constraints, named products and reasons in the answer. Was your model absent, rejected because of an inaccurate specification or correctly excluded because it did not meet the requirements? A competitor mention alone does not prove a failure. Review the applicable product facts before deciding what to fix.

Are buyers reaching the right product or the wrong destination?

Inspect the complete destination URL and the item it represents. Distinguish the correct product page from a homepage, obsolete revision, broken link or unrelated model. For manufacturers selling through partners, a valid destination may be an approved dealer, documentation or RFQ route. An external retailer link is not automatically lost business.

A brand mention can still hide the wrong model

A response can name your brand while describing another size, generation or compatibility profile. Check the exact product identity rather than treating any mention as success. When the model is unclear, keep that uncertainty visible and link the review to the official variant record.

Use three different buyer questions

For discovery, ask which products suit a real use case without supplying your brand. For comparison, ask about the named model and the requirements that matter. For purchase, ask for the exact model and its appropriate official destination. These example prompts serve different decisions and should not be blended into one score.

Review a useful result, not a promised ranking

The useful record contains the frozen question, provider, date, answer, identified products, competing products and URLs. Review a fact mismatch separately from a missing recommendation or wrong link. OpenAI itself notes that shopping research can make product-detail mistakes; checking the merchant source remains important.

Make an addressable change and ask again

An official product page, variant mapping or outdated description may be within your control. A competitor website or external model ranking is not. Approve a supported correction, preserve the earlier answer and repeat the same frozen questions. A new answer is not proof of an additional sale or of a guaranteed recommendation.

Questions before starting

Can you make ChatGPT stop recommending a competitor?

No. The aim is to establish what the answer says and whether incorrect or unclear product facts may be addressed. The assistant can still choose another product.

Is a marketplace or dealer link always the wrong outcome?

No. The right destination depends on how you sell and the exact product requested. Judge the link against the agreed destination and model, not simply whether the domain is yours.

What is the first step?

Open the existing Pilot flow with your website or product page. Start with selected models and real buyer questions rather than promising immediate coverage of the entire catalog.
