What it does
- Gives identifiers in fields meant for them, so a product on your page can be
matched with the same product elsewhere.
- Lets parsers read price, availability and brand without guessing.
- Declares the canonical URL alongside the identity.
What it does not do
- It does not rank a page. There is no position to earn.
- It does not replace visible facts. A model quoting a page quotes text; markup
that says one thing while the text says another creates a contradiction on your own page.
- It does not make a citation happen by itself. Across 22,789 citations in
answers about real products, 37% pointed at the maker's or seller's own site (study). We have not measured how many of the sites in that count publish structured data, so the number says nothing either way about markup — only that most citations went elsewhere.
How to use it
As a second channel, generated from the same source as the visible text, in the same release: /learn/structured-data-vs-visible-text. What any published signal does and does not prove is at /evidence.
